Decision Fatigue

I just took a trip without my kids and realized that I had to decide about 798 things before I left to be away for 4 days. Should I move a client to Tuesday, or Wednesday? Who should I ask to take child 2 to horse lesson 3 of the week?

I realized how all of those small decisions can add up to overwhelm and exhaustion.

Reportedly, we make 35,000 decisions daily (and honestly I bet women make twice that).

Here are three quick tips to help you combat decision fatigue:

  1. Establish Routines: Set daily routines to reduce decision-making - whether that be your morning routine, the meals you make (or days you don’t cook), when you meet with your team members 1 on 1, the structure of those meetings, etc. Setting solid routines reduces making decisions more than once.

  2. Time the Important Decisions: Identify your peak times for decision-making and tackle important choices then. For example, I make important, complicated decisions in the morning. Afternoon is a great time for less critical decisions for me.

  3. Take Breaks: Step away from decision-making when needed. A short walk, quick meditation session or just listening to music can give your brain a break! (Currently rotating new Taylor with new Kasey Musgraves with new Beyonce.)
